New Program Resources
Prospective Student Athlete Resources
Collegiate Artistic Swimming FAQ#
This varies by university and what they are able to offer, if anything. Varsity programs are the only programs that offer athletic scholarships, but many institutions have access to both need-based and academic merit scholarships. Athletic scholarships are often ‘broken up’ so that more athletes are able to benefit by receiving a percentage.
A dead period is a period of time during the recruitment process that varsity programs following NCAA guidelines are not allowed to have contact with prospective student-athletes. While you may reach out as a student during the dead period, be aware coaches may not be able to engage in conversation. They will be able to advise you when this dead period is.
Each team differs. Varsity programs that currently field two teams include UIW and Ohio State. Stanford and TWU are looking to increase the size of their teams in the future. This means each year may look different for the number of recruits as students graduate. Some club programs also field two teams. One may be made up of students completely new to the sport and one may be higher-level made up of athletes who competed at the club or age group level and are looking to continue to advance their skills.
Recruiting trips happen in the fall. Offers are typically solidified in the spring semester, but can roll throughout the whole academic year. Offers often will be discussed after the student-athlete is accepted to the university through early or general admission.
For varsity teams, there may be some assistance offered during the application process. For club teams, students must gain admission to the university on their own academic merit.
In general, varsity programs are funded by their universities and have practice/GPA requirements as well as academic support. Club teams are usually student-run but may be supported by local coaches and have their own set of perks through student life. Club programs have many leadership opportunities as the function of the team depends on student initiative. Athletes can hold positions such as president, treasurer, social media chair, etc.
It would depend on if it was a varsity or club program due to NCAA regulations. That would be a great question to check with the specific institution you are interested in. In general, it should be permissible through NCAA guidelines as long as you fill out the correct paperwork with your compliance office.
No restrictions, it is your pathway! Coaches will often try to be as flexible as possible to allow you your academic experience.
Some schools may take the whole summer off while others offer a brief break period before reducing their number of practice hours. The offseason can be used for increasing individual skill levels, jobs, and internships, instead of focusing on routines.
Coaches visit USA Artistic Swimming national championships or watch the livestream to look for recruits often. The best way to ensure you are being evaluated is to reach out first.
