For the second year in a row, USA Artistic Swimming is proud to host an Athletes with Disabilities Invitational. The event will be hosted jointly with the 2023 Pan Am Aquatics Artistic Swimming Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The sunshine state will serve as host to both events in August at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center.
USAAS is elated to be offering another competition opportunity for athletes with disabilities in 2023. Last year’s event saw participation from global AWD participants in Charlotte. The 2022 invitational was well-attended and ran alongside the 2022 FINA Youth World Championships. AWD participants compete in two separate categories of cognitive or physical disabilities, with different tiers for each, so that all athletes can showcase their skills. Participants from a wide array of backgrounds and experiences compete in figures, solo, male solo, duet, mixed duet, trio or team routines.
USAAS first offered the AWD category at the 2021 Junior Olympic Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo. and has prioritized expanding opportunities for this group ever since thanks to a passionate collaboration between staff and volunteers within the organization.
“USAAS is excited to continue to grow our athletes with disabilities efforts domestically and internationally. We have an incredible community of leaders in this space that made this opportunity happen and we are all eager to invite and host athletes from across the globe in Fort Lauderdale,” Adam Andrasko, USA Artistic Swimming CEO, said.
