COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first-ever FINA Virtual World Series was a success this weekend, with two days of competition live-streamed for artistic fans across the world to enjoy. Over 4,500 viewers tuned in each day to watch artistic swimming return to competition after a long and difficult break due to the pandemic. In the stretch of chaos, athletes everywhere had to get creative to continue to improve and maintain a training schedule. That hard work and tenacity was evident this weekend as athletes from 12 different countries put the strength and grace required to be an artistic swimmer on full display. With 4,752 viewers on Saturday 4,629 on Sunday, the artistic swimming community was brought together in an innovative way to continue to showcase what makes the sport great.
Across the free and technical competitions, countries featured new, revamped or refined choreography. Anita Alvarez and Lindi Schroeder had excellent breakout performances in the duet categories, capturing first in both tech and free. Their performance to Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” notched a score of 84.9333 while their instrumental tech routine received an 83.4588. This marks a great start for the pair as they continue on the path to hopeful Olympic duet qualification. Nikki Dzurko, in her debut performance with the senior national team, competed in the technical solo event and was awarded a gold medal. Anita graced viewers with an emotional performance to Jessie J’s “R.O.S.E. Confessional,” but was edged by Canada’s Jacqueline Simoneau for first place by just under three points. The “Robot” performance was a highlight of the weekend, earning an 87.5667 and nailing the difficult lifts within the routine. Even as the only competitors in the category, Team USA showed grit and a desire to be better than they were last year and last performance. This drive will carry them into the rest of the season as they train for other World Series events and the eventual Olympic qualification tournament at the beginning of May.
History was made this weekend, as the incredible Bill May participated in two events. For the first time on a FINA World Series stage, male solo was featured on the schedule. Bill secured a gold in this event with a passionate swim dedicated to the tumultuous year we’ve all experienced, earning himself an 86.7333. He also accompanied Team USA for the highlight portion of the competition where they took first with an elegant routine choreographed by assistant Coach Anna Voloyshna.
